Maison Chance works to create permanent changes to the living conditions of the under-privileged children and disabled in Vietnam. By providing a shelter, education, training and family cohesion to these groups of people who have been previously rejected by society, we create the necessary conditions for their re-entry into normal community live. It is because of our clear mission and commitment to children and disabled that Maison Chance has been recognized as one of the best run ONG in Vietnam and has received a number of awards.

In the 2009 fiscal year, 93 percent of all revenues went to program services and only 7% of revenues are spent on Management and Administration. That percentage is an average for all of Maison Chance's programs worldwide. The percentage spent on in any particular program may vary as indicated below.

Program Funding

Maison Chance’s programs for the disadvantaged and disabled can be categorized under the following headings:

  • Education: Maison Chance provides basic education to disadvantaged children and street kids from level 1 to level 5. The expenses under this category include the salaries and pensions paid to educators and school supplies.
  • Shelter and vocational training: Maison Chance provides a shelter and vocational training to orphans and disabled. The expenses under this category include the salaries of the staff employed at the shelter, the art professors, teachers and educators in the various vocational training classes at the Take Wing Center. They include also the costs of materials and equipment needed for rehabilitation and training at the Shelter and the Take Wing Center.
  • Health care: Maison Chance provides first aid and post surgery rehabilitation at the Shelter. It provides also for the costs of in-hospital dialysis and surgeries as well as medication and post-surgery hospitalization. All these costs are regrouped under the health care and medical costs. It should be noted that there is no universal health care in Vietnam and therefore the costs are entirely borne by Maison Chance.
  • Nutrition: Maison Chance provides foods to all beneficiaries at the Take Wing Center during lunch. The students from grade 1 to 5 take advantage of these free lunches so that they can have a balanced nutrition given that they would not have food otherwise during the day. In addition to the lunch, the in-house beneficiaries receive a light supper at the Maison Chance shelter in the evening.
  • Production & Sales: Maison Chance buys materials used in the various vocational classes such as bamboo and tools used in the wood working studio, fabrics for the sewing studio and painting materials and art supplies for the painting studio. In addition, Maison Chance pays a salary to the disabled who participate in the program and to those who graduated from the vocational training classes and continue as workers at the Take Wing Center.
  • Non-resident and institutional support: Maison Chance provides financial and material support to the poor and disadvantaged who do not reside at Maison Chance but who came to Maison Chance for help. These disadvantaged people who do not have all the conditions to be admitted as full-time residents are however offered free medical exams and medications, sometime a rice bag or other foods. Maison Chance also recognizes the need to help other orphanages in Vietnam and other charitable organizations worldwide. These financial assistances are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

The following pie chart shows the program expenses allocation:

In the 2009 fiscal year, total expenditures amounted to $US 621,972, of which $US 297,203 was expenditures related to the construction of Village Chance. Of the remaining expenditures ($US 324,769).

Sources of Funds

To fund these programs, Maison Chance depends primarily on donations from international corporations and institutions as well as from generous individuals. Other sources of revenue for Maison Chance come from fundraising, sales of products and investment income. The revenue allocation for 2009 is shown in the attached diagram:

Financial Information

Since the creation of the Federation in 2009 and the regrouping all the Maison Chance organizations worldwide, an effort is under way to establish a consolidated financial statement for this organization as a whole. The first step is for the Associations in the different countries to harmonize their books based on a common accounting definition and procedure. Next, we plan to publish the audited financial statements for the whole organization in 2010. Currently only the financial statements for 2009 of Maison Chance Vietnam and of Maison Chance USA are made public.
